Beckham, Inter Miami's Freedom Park Stadium Approved! Coming in 2025!

FIFA Soccer finally has a home in Miami! If you, like millions of other “footie” lovers, have ever hoped to catch a FIFA World Cup in Miami, you are one step closer! A dream in the making since 2014, David Beckham and Inter Miami will finally have a stadium. The Miami Freedom Park & Soccer Village was approved by the city, making Miami eligible to become the next host for FIFA’s World Cup in 2026.

Redeveloping a portion of the city-owned golf course at Melreese Country Club adjacent to the Miami International Airport, the Miami Freedom Park & Soccer Village will be a 73-acre development including a world-class stadium, public parks, retail, office, and hotel use. The project will be a game-changer in the gentrification of the mainly older and untouched residential community of Grapeland Heights.

In return for Miami commissioners voting 4-1 in favor of a no-bid, 99-year lease for the legacy project, the developers have agreed to pay $4.3 million in annual rent along with a host of other community benefits. Fans can expect to catch their first Major League Soccer game at the facility in 2025.

What is Miami’s Freedom Park & Soccer Village?

Miami Freedom Park & Soccer Village

Just two miles from Miami International Airport, Miami Freedom Park will be a world-class, 25,000-seat, multi-use stadium accompanied by a 58-acre public park, soccer fields for community use, a 400,000 square-foot technology hub (office space), 600,000 square feet of retail and entertainment, plus a 750-room hotel.

Developed by Coral Gables-based billionaires Jose and Jorge Mas of MasTec, plus celebrity footballer David Beckham, Freedom Park will also be the new home of the Inter Miami CF soccer club. Co-owned by Mas and Beckham, the soccer team is currently based at the 18,000-seat DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

Once approved for zoning allowances and construction, there are also long-term plans of bringing a professional women’s soccer team along with world-class soccer programs for both girls and boys to Freedom Park. There have also been discussions for the University of Miami to play its football games there.

Beckham’s Miami Freedom Park - Benefits to the City

Although the project has struggled to gain political approval and changed over four prospective venues in the last nine years, developers have long been advocating the benefits to the community if the 73-acre development was to be built. These expected benefits include:

  • This would be the first project of its scale to be built entirely with private funding, using zero tax-payer dollars.
  • The city would gain $4.3 million in annual leases for 99 years.
  • The developers have pledged to donate an additional $25 million for improvements to various public parks and baywalks across Miami.
  • The 58-acre Freedom Park would be the largest of its kind in the city, offering its neighboring communities full access to playing fields and plenty of green open spaces.
  • The legacy project would also invest around $36 million in environmental remediation for 131 acres of land at no cost to the city – a site known to be struggling with arsenic and lead pollution.
  • The park is set to feature generous parking spaces, three access points, and a pedestrian bridge connecting to multiple forms of mass transit for optimal traffic management.
  • The project is expected to create around 15,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities in total, including pre-construction and post.
  • Expected to host marquee events and have Inter Miami CF play up to 17 home games during the regular MLS season, Freedom Park is also expected to become a key tourist destination, supplemented by two hotels, offices, retail, and entertainment, and connection to multiple public transit options.
  • It would also be a valuable addition for residents of Wynwood, Edgewater, and Downtown Miami – neighborhoods just 6 miles from the world-class stadium.
